What Is Diwali?

Diwali, often called the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by millions of people around the world. Different communities and regions have their own traditions and ways of celebrating, with themes including light, hope, renewal and the triumph of good over evil.

For schools, Diwali can provide an excellent opportunity to explore Indian culture, music, dance and traditionsthrough creative and interactive activities.

A dance workshop allows pupils to learn by doing. Instead of simply watching a demonstration, they can experience rhythm, movement and choreography for themselves.

Experience Indian Dance and Bollywood

At VG Dance Workshops, pupils are introduced to a lively combination of Indian-inspired dance and Bollywood choreography, adapted to suit their age and ability.

Depending on the group, activities may include expressive hand movements, rhythmic footwork, musicality, group formations and simple choreography.

For younger pupils, colourful scarves can also be incorporated into the session, creating an exciting visual element and encouraging children to explore movement, space and coordination.

No previous dance experience is necessary. The aim is to create an environment where everyone can join in, have fun and experience something new.

Diwali Dance Workshops for EYFS and Primary Schools

EYFS – Nursery & Reception

Young children can discover Indian-inspired movement through playful music and simple actions.

Our EYFS Diwali workshops focus on participation rather than complicated choreography, helping children develop rhythm, coordination, listening and confidence.

Activities can support early physical development while introducing pupils to a different cultural celebration in an enjoyable way.

KS1 Diwali Dance Workshops

KS1 pupils can begin learning simple Indian dance movements before progressing into a fun Bollywood-inspired routine.

Repetition, demonstration and music help children follow the choreography while developing confidence and coordination.

KS2 Diwali Dance Workshops

For KS2, sessions can introduce more developed choreography and performance.

Pupils can learn movements individually, in pairs and as a group before coming together to perform their routine.

These Diwali workshops for primary schools can work particularly well alongside classroom activities, assemblies, art projects, storytelling and cultural learning.

Diwali Workshops for Secondary Schools

Diwali can also provide an exciting enrichment opportunity for older students.

Our Bollywood dance workshops for secondary schools can be adapted for KS3 and KS4, with more challenging choreography, musicality and performance work.

Students can develop their movement vocabulary while working collaboratively and experiencing a style of dance that may be outside their normal curriculum.

Sessions can be incorporated into:

  • Performing Arts enrichment

  • Arts Week

  • Cultural celebration days

  • International Day

  • Diversity programmes

  • School events

  • Creative curriculum activities

What Will Pupils Learn?

A Diwali dance workshop for schools can combine physical activity, creativity and cultural learning.
